Balquhidder to Loch Lubnaig

Balquhidder – Kirkton Glen

Path through mixed woodland, opening up to open hill land and the small but pleasant Lochan an Eireannach . (Parking at Balquhidder Village Hall )

Plants – Cuckoo flower (Lady’s smock), Wood anemone. Wood sorrel.

Birds – Most common woodland species, plus Raven, Buzzard, Ring Ouzel.

Mammals – Red Deer

Insects – Orange Tip Butterfly, fine cased Caddis fly larvae.

Balquhidder – Ben More and Stob Binnein ridges

Steep path up to the highest mountain in the LL&TN Park. (Parking at Inverlochlarig NN 445 184)

Plants – Figwort, Purple moor grass

Birds – Merlin, Ringed Plover, Golden Plover. Sand Martin.

Mammals – Red Deer

Strathyre Woods East and West

Several paths leading East and West from Strathyre Village up into mainly open coniferous woodland and open meadow areas. (Parking at Strathyre Forestry Commision Car Park NN 560 168)

Plants – Scot’s Pine, Larch, Juniper (one of the largest populations in Central Scotland). Common Spotted orchid. Northern Marsh orchid. Wood anemone. Wood sorrel. Lady-fern, Lemon scented fern.

Fungi – Brown Birch bolete, CandleSnuff Fungus, The Blusher, Chanterelle.

Birds – Spotted Flycatcher, Goldcrest, Chiffchaff, Tawny Owl

Mammals – Roe Deer, Red Squirrel, Pine Marten, and rarely, Badger

Insects – Peacock Butterfly

Path through forest and open glen with views to magnificent mountainscape, and ruined sheiling hut remains. The paths goes from Loch Lubnaig past the foothills of Stωc a’ chroin to Loch Earnside. (Parking at Loch Lubnaig Picnic site NN 587 117 and Ardchullarie Layby NN 583 136)

Loch Lubnaig

From many of the lochside laybys you can gain access to the shoreline of the Loch

Plants – Bogbean, Lesser Stitchwort, Ribwort Plantain, Yellow flag Iris

Birds – Little Grebe, Goosander, Pochard, Common Sandpiper.

Mammals – Roe Deer, Pine Marten, Otter, Red Squirrel.

Insects – Azure Damselfly, Golden-ringed Dragonfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Peacock Butterfly

Amphibians – Palmate Newt, Smooth Newt.

Fish – Salmon, Arctic Charr, Brook Lamprey, River Lamprey, Sea Lamprey.
